What are Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are used to repair teeth that have been damaged by cavities or minor fractures. When decay creates a hole (cavity) in your tooth, a filling is used to restore its shape, function, and strength, and to prevent further decay.

Types of Dental Fillings

  • Composite Fillings – Tooth-colored, blend well with natural teeth, ideal for front or visible teeth.
  • Amalgam Fillings – Made of silver, durable, and suitable for back teeth due to their strength.
  • Ceramic Fillings – Made of porcelain, stain-resistant, and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Gold Fillings – Long-lasting but expensive, used in cases where durability is prioritized.
  • Glass Ionomer Fillings – Release fluoride, making them good for children or areas prone to decay.

Dental Fillings Procedure

  • The dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray if needed.
  • The decayed portion of the tooth is carefully removed.
  • The cavity is cleaned and prepared for the filling.
  • The filling material is placed in layers and shaped to fit the tooth.
  • The filling is polished to ensure smoothness and comfort.

Precautions After Dental Fillings

  • Avoid chewing on hard foods for at least 24 hours.
  • Do not consume extremely hot or cold items immediately after the filling.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene – brush and floss regularly.
  • Report any sensitivity or discomfort to your dentist.
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups for ongoing care.
