What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is a dental procedure used to save a severely damaged or infected tooth. It involves removing the infected pulp (soft tissue inside the tooth), cleaning and disinfecting the inner chamber, and sealing it to prevent further infection. RCT helps relieve pain, restores normal function, and avoids the need for tooth extraction.

Types of Root Canal Treatment

  • Conventional Root Canal – Standard procedure done on single or multiple-rooted teeth.
  • Re-treatment RCT – Done when a previous RCT fails or complications arise.
  • Single-Visit RCT – Completed in one sitting for eligible cases with minimal infection.
  • Microscopic RCT – Uses advanced magnification for better precision and success rates.

Root Canal Treatment Procedure

  • Step 1: X-ray is taken to assess the extent of infection.
  • Step 2: Local anesthesia is given for a painless experience.
  • Step 3: Infected pulp is removed; canals are cleaned and shaped.
  • Step 4: Canals are filled with a special material and sealed.
  • Step 5: A crown is placed to restore tooth strength and function.

Precautions After Root Canal Treatment

  • Avoid chewing on the treated side until the final crown is placed.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene – brush and floss regularly.
  • Avoid very hard or sticky foods that can damage the crown.
  • Attend follow-up appointments for monitoring.
  • If pain or swelling persists, consult your dentist immediately.
